Friends/AEPi Eta Chi and Detroit Alumni Brothers/Movie Group/Allnet-Global Crossing Alumni
With sadness we must announce the death of a wonderful friend and the wife of AEPI Brother Howard Gurwin, Xi'71, Jill Gurwin. Jill was 58 at the time of her death and suffered a heart attack while being held in the arms of her husband. Jill and Howard may have been the perfect couple -he always said "yes, dear" and she never said "no". Seriously, and Jill had the greatest sense of humor with the ability to always bring a smile to someone's no matter the situation - so being serious is difficult; Jill and Howard were married 38 years and as anyone will tell you no couple loved each other more deeply than the two of them did. Two married children gave them four grandchildren who were unquestionably the apple of Jill's eye - if pressed she just might have shown you a couple of pictures. The world has lost a very special person and our thoughts and prayers are with the Gurwin family during these difficult days.
Brother Steve Bernstein was honored my the Michigan State Chapter of Hillel for his years of dedicated work both to Hillel and AEPi at MSU but in the metro Detroit Area at a recent Shabbat Hillel Dinner. Steve, an attorney in Farmington Hills, is a former president of AEPi International and legal counsel to the Fraternity. He has been active as an Alumni and National Fraternity officer since graduation in the 1970's.
The monthly AEPi dinner is usually the third week of the month. If you are not getting the announcements let Michael Ansbach or me know - the crowd comes from a large number of chapters around the country and different age groups - some even older than me - or Michael!
Leon Cooperman, Eta Chi '64, was honored by Hunter College with an Honorary Doctor of Humanities. Lee was once described as being a "mensch" when he was at Hunter and still is. We are all proud of Lee and the honor that he has received. Well deserved Dr. Cooperman :)
The Movie Group lost one of its oldest and most liked members this summer. George Cantor had been fighting cancer for a number of years and throughout his battle maintained is humor and love of Detroit. Whenever he was at the Movie Group dinners his stories and discussions were very special to hear. George had been a reporter and feature writer for the Detroit News, Detroit Free Press and Jewish News during his long career. He recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from a Michigan News writers organization and is shortly to be inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. We will miss you, George.
Margo and Mark Hartzman became grandparents for the second and third time when their daughter gave birth to twins in Israel. The twins who had to remain in the hospital for some time till their weight was up are now at home in Israel and doing fine.
Cliff and Roberta Lash claim that their grandson Matt has already received an invitation to try out for the Lions but is holding out for "da Bears" - he is only five months old and weighs over 18 pounds already. Well Jason isn't exactly the puny kid on the comic book that Charles Atlas was preaching to - he might have been Charles Atlas though and Matt is going to be one big boy just like his dad.
Congratulation to Marc Manson on his 60th birthday. Think he had a record number of birthday parties!
